Cars and their Female Drivers

Every day I get into my car, turn on the ignition and drive off into the big wide world. I don’t think about my car much; it doesn’t have a name, but sometimes it does cross my mind – albeit briefly - that maybe I should make it my business to find out more about the automotive world. From Mercedes to Fiat to Rolls Royce and Toyota, there are one hell of a lot of cars out there driving up and down highways and motorways all across the world, but most of us female drivers rarely stop to think about the chunk of metal sitting beneath our bums.

If my car goes wrong or fails me in some way; I phone my boyfriend and then he tells me to phone the road recovery team and then when I phone them, they come out and tell me that I’ve run out of petrol. I feel stupid and wonder why I haven’t even learnt the basics about cars because, lets face it – I’m kind of letting the side down. Every day there is a man somewhere in the world cursing us women drivers, or backing a study that says our map-reading or driving skills, or lack of – apparently – is all linked to our lack of testosterone in the womb. Ha! But then again, how can I argue when I’m stood at the side of the road with no petrol?
When my dad showed me how to change a wheel on my first car I remember thinking “am I really interested and do I really need to know this?” but now, instead of standing at the roadside waiting for a man in a fluorescent jacket to come and rescue me, I wish I had paid more attention because I would really like to be able to get out, roll my sleeves up, jack up the car and prove that us girls do know a little about our automobiles – at least about tyres, if not engines!

However, there are plenty of ladies out there who are not letting the side down and intakes of females to automotive college and car mechanic courses are on the up and what a blessing that is. As a girl I always wonder if the garage where I take my car are being genuine or if instead they see a pushover walking through the doors who they can swindle some cash out of for faulty breaks that are clearly new, a replaced clutch that had nothing wrong with it in the first place or maybe just a few tyres because “honest lady, they are totally threadbare.” Hmmm – how many times exactly have I been taken for a ride in a car that could go the distance just fine before they fiddled with it a bit? I say bring on the girls and let us sisters’ stick together.
And the female influence on the automotive world doesn’t stop there. Volvo even launched a car at the Geneva Motorshow back in 2004 designed by women, for women – hell, we’re getting in on the act all over! Adored for its beautiful styling, fantastic storage elements and all those lovely little bits and bobs that us ladies like, I wonder why more ideas haven’t come to the forefront? It certainly makes me want to get out there and become a car designer this minute.

So, next time you get in your car and get shouted at for being a ‘stupid woman driver’, instead of letting it get to you – stop the car, get out, spanner in hand and do a little ‘doctoring’ job on the offending man’s car. That will stump him and it might go some way to changing the worlds’ view on us girls being unworthy participants behind the wheel.
